As I have mentioned in several articles — I’m not perfect. And I never will be. When it comes to zero waste, I’m still at the beginning of this journey. I don’t want you to think that I don’t make any mistakes or that I don’t use any plastic packaging or products, because that’s not true. Every day I learn from my own mistakes, look for possible and available alternatives, take small steps. I myself like to gather inspiration on how to constantly improve, and I share my knowledge with you right here. That is why I have prepared an article for you today, in which I will share with you six of my favourite zero waste products — along with a description of why I fell in love with them and why I highly recommend them to you.
Stainless steel water bottle
I bought this one… maybe two years ago. When I saw it in a package-free store in Bratislava, it immediately caught my eye with its simple design and ideal size. And since then I have brought it everywhere I go! It fits perfectly in my backpack, it’s light, and because it’s made of stainless steel, it doesn’t break or otherwise get damaged, and it keeps the temperature of the drink longer — so the water stays cold in it during the summer, and on the contrary, I can enjoy hot tea in winter for extra few more hours. It’s true that stainless steel bottles tend to be a bit more expensive, especially when compared to a plastic alternative, but it’s a purchase that definitely pays off.
Compost container
All over Zlín, next to containers for municipal waste and containers for plastics, glass or paper, there are also brown bins for organic waste — and this should be the case in every city. We can throw leaves or tree branches into them, as well as leftovers from the kitchen. And on the Zemito.cz website, I discovered this beautiful container for compost — and I didn’t hesitate for a moment to buy it. I keep my compost in the refrigerator because I don’t want it to rot and stink — and the container is the perfect size, has a beautiful design, a practical handle, and in the lid has a carbon filter that prevents unwanted odors.
Brush for dishes and cleaning
You can get these brushes in most package-free stores or eco-drug stores. It costs around one euro and there are two types available — softer and rougher. We started using them when I was living in Bratislava; and since then I haven’t used anything else for washing dishes and cleaning. The bristles hold their shape for a very long time, they clean all dirt and the brush doesn’t stink like plastic sponges for dishes. You can use them just like that or with a practical handle, thanks to which you can get to the bottom of the cups and to all corners of the room.
Little containers
I didn’t even know that something like that existed, unless I saw them at U Dobrožrúta in Bratislava. They are small containers into which you can put anything. They are made of aluminum, which makes them super light, they have a lid that seals very well and doesn’t leak liquids, and are small enough not to take up space, but still large enough to hold a decent amount of products. I use them to store the oil I use to remove my eye make-up, for cosmetics, but even when I travel and I don’t want small things like earrings or necklaces to get lost in my suitcase.
Wooden hairbrush
If I have to admit — I didn’t comb my hair at all a few years ago. My hair is naturally curly, and combing it only disrupts the structure of the curls (so my hair then looks even worse than before), so I avoided it altogether for a long time. Until I tried the wooden brush. This one is quite small, which suits me best, because it fits in a drawer and a suitcase. And the advantage of a wooden brush is that the wood can absorb the grease from the hair, which also helps to prolong the interval between washes.
Bamboo toothbrush
I don’t even remember the last time I used a plastic toothbrush. It was one of the first zero waste alternatives I tried; and if you don’t have one yet, I’m only recommending it. Especially the Slovak brand Ecoheart — its shape fits in the hand, has soft bristles that last a long time, and is available in several colour alternatives. And when it is done being used to clean crevices and other hard-to-reach places, you can compost the body of the brush.
What are your favourite zero waste products?
Ako som spomínala už vo viacerých článkoch — nie som dokonalá. A ani nikdy nebudem. Čo sa zero waste týka, stále som na začiatku tejto cesty. Nechcem, aby ste si mysleli, že som neomylná alebo že nepoužívam žiadne plastové obaly alebo výrobky, lebo to nie je pravda. Každý deň sa učím z vlastných chýb, hľadám možné a dostupné alternatívy, robím malé kroky. Ja sama rada zbieram inšpiráciu, ako sa stále zlepšovať, a svoje poznatky s vami zdieľam práve tu. A preto som dnes pre vás pripravila článok, v ktorom sa s vami podelím o šesť mojich obľúbených zero waste produktov — spolu s popisom, prečo som si ich zamilovala a prečo vám ich vrelo odporúčam.
Nerezová fľaša
Túto svoju som si kúpila… možno už aj dva roky dozadu. Keď som ju zbadala v bezobalovom obchode v Bratislave, hneď mi svojim jednoduchým dizajnom a ideálnou veľkosťou padla do oka. A odvtedy ju nosím všade, kam idem! Perfektne sa mi zmestí do batohu, je ľahká, a tým, že je z nerezu, sa nerozbije ani nijako inak nepoškodí, a dlhšie udrží teplotu nápoja — takže počas leta v nej voda ostane studená, a naopak v zime sa môžem tešiť z teplého čaju ešte niekoľko hodín. Je pravda, že nerezové fľaše bývajú trochu drahšie, hlavne keď ich porovnáme s plastovou alternatívou, ale je to kúpa, ktorá sa jednoznačne oplatí.
Nádoba na kompost
Po celom Zlíne sú vedľa kontajnerov na komunálny odpad a nádob na plasty, sklo či papier rozmiestnené aj hnedé koše určené na bio odpad — a malo by to tak byť v každom meste. Hádzať do nich môžeme lístie či konáre stromov, ale aj zvyšky z kuchyne. A na stránke Zemito.cz som objavila túto krásnu nádobu na kompost — a ani chvíľu som nad jej kúpou neváhala. Ja svoj kompost držím v chladničke, pretože nechcem, aby začal hniť a smrdieť — a nádoba má perfektnú veľkosť, krásny vzhľad, praktickú rúčku, a vo veku má uhlíkový filter, ktorý zabraňuje nežiadanému pachu.
Kefa na riad a upratovanie
Tieto kefy zoženiete vo väčšine bezobalových obchodoch alebo obchodoch z eko-drogériou. Stoja okolo eura a dostupné sú dva druhy — mäkšia a tvrdšia. My sme ich začali používať ešte v časoch, kedy som bývala v Bratislave; a odvtedy na umývanie riadu a čistenie nepoužívam nič iné. Štetinky veľmi dlho držia svoj tvar, vyčistia všetky nečistoty a kefa nesmrdí ako plastové hubky na riad. Používať ich môžete len tak alebo s praktickou rúčkou, vďaka ktorej sa dostanete na dno pohárov i do všetkých kútov v miestnosti.
Prenosky
Ani som nevedela, že niečo také existuje, pokiaľ som ich nevidela u Dobrožrútov. Sú to malé nádoby, do ktorých môžete dať úplne čokoľvek. Sú z hliníka, vďaka čomu sú ľahučké, majú viečko, ktoré veľmi dobre tesní a neprepustí ani tekutiny, a sú dostatočne malé na to, aby nezaberali miesto, ale stále dosť veľké, takže sa do nich zmestí slušné množstvo produktov. Ja ich používam na uskladnenie oleja, ktorý používam na odlíčenie očí, na kozmetiku, ale aj keď cestujem a nechcem, aby sa mi drobnosti ako náušnice alebo náhrdelníky stratili v kufri.
Drevená kefa
Ak sa mám priznať — ešte pár rokov dozadu som si vlasy vôbec nečesala. Moje vlasy sú prirodzene kučeravé, a česanie iba narúša štruktúru kučier (takže moje vlasy potom vyzerajú ešte horšie ako predtým), preto som sa dlho tomu úplne vyhýbala. Až pokiaľ som nevyskúšala drevenú kefu. Táto je celkom malá, čo mi maximálne vyhovuje, pretože sa zmestí do zásuvky i kufra. A výhoda drevenej kefy spočíva i v tom, že drevo do seba dokáže vsať mastnotu z vlasov, čím tiež pomáha predĺžiť interval medzi umývaním.
Bambusová zubná kefka
Už si ani nepamätám, kedy naposledy som používala plastovú zubnú kefku. Bola to jedna z prvých zero waste alternatív, ktorú som vyskúšala; a pokiaľ svoju ešte nemáte, iba vám ju odporúčam. Hlavne slovenskú značku Ecoheart — jej tvar sadne do ruky, má mäkké štetinky, ktoré dlho vydržia, a je vo viacerých farebných alternatívach. A keď už doslúži i na čistenie štrbín a iných ťažko dostupných miest, telo kefky môžete skompostovať.
